Abstract

This commentary proposes the adoption of standardized, evidence-based checklists for both pediatric (PALS) and adult (ACLS) resuscitations in the Emergency Department (ED) to mitigate the effects of chaos and high-stress on care delivery. These checklists serve as critical cognitive aids, aligning with the structured approaches advocated by Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) form incorporates the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT) and a detailed primary and secondary survey, while the Adult Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) form similarly emphasizes the primary and secondary surveys and the rapid management of life-threatening conditions, including cardiac arrest and arrhythmias.

Implementing these forms is expected to significantly enhance patient safety by reducing the likelihood of overlooking critical signs and symptoms, especially in pediatrics where rapid deterioration is possible. Furthermore, they improve efficiency by providing a clear roadmap for providers, support faster decision-making, and ensure a consistent level of assessment and documentation. The forms also optimize communication during handovers, serve as a structured educational tool, and improve legal and quality documentation. A pilot program, mandatory training, and an established feedback loop are recommended for successful implementation.
